Massage near Menlo Park: an evening that fits around dinner

California Avenue station is two stops south of Menlo Park, at 101 California Avenue, one block from our door and about a five-minute walk along the same street. Coming by train is the version of this evening where neither of you has to think about the drive home afterwards, which matters more than people expect at the end of 90 minutes on a table.

Metered parking runs the length of California Avenue, with public lots behind the street when the meters are full. Mid-afternoon on a weekday is the hardest time to find a space; by the start of an evening appointment the block has usually turned over.

Pressure is set table by table. One of you can ask for firm work across the shoulders while the other takes a slow hour of Swedish with organic oil, and the therapists follow whatever each person says at the start. Organic oil, a complimentary hot stone pass and hot towels come with every massage on the menu, so there is nothing to add on to make the room feel like an occasion.

The studio closes at 9:30 PM seven days a week, so a 60 minutes couples session can start as late as about 8:30 PM and a 90 minute booking at about 8:00 PM. Mornings are the only part of the week that shifts: Monday opens at 10:30 AM, Tuesday through Sunday at 9:30 AM.

Put the appointment down before the restaurant table. The couples room is a single room, so two bookings cannot overlap, and the later in the week you are aiming for the earlier it is worth fixing the time.

Take 9:30 PM, subtract the session length, then subtract ten more minutes for arriving, changing and telling your therapist where you want the work. A 90 minute booking therefore wants you through the door by about 7:50 PM.

The price printed on our menu is the price you pay, booked online or walked in. Square shows which therapists and times are free, which is the only reason to book there rather than call.

After. Lying face down on a full stomach is uncomfortable for the first twenty minutes, and most people come off the table sleepy rather than hungry. California Avenue is a restaurant street, so dinner after an evening session is a walk down the block instead of a second drive.

Drink water afterwards and give yourself a slow exit. The Mayo Clinic overview of massage therapy describes it as something people use for stress, muscle tension and general wellbeing, and lists what to raise with a therapist before the session starts: recent surgery, fractures, burns or healing wounds, and any bleeding disorder or blood thinner.

Book two separate Body Massages at $90 each. Two hour-long bookings at the same start time cost the same as the couples room, in two rooms instead of one. That suits people who would rather not share the hour.

If one of you would rather not be on a massage table at all, the Lymphatic Facial Massage is $84 for 30 minutes. It is light, rhythmic work along the face and neck, done face up. Fifty minutes of the same is $168.

A first visit also opens the 90 minute Combo: 60 minutes of Swedish or deep tissue massage followed by a 30 minute lymphatic facial, $128 instead of the $188 list price. One of you can take that while the other takes a straight hour of body work, and you still finish within a few minutes of each other.

Organic oil, a hot stone pass and hot towels are included with every massage at no charge. The two paid add-ons are cupping at $20 and a body scrub at $30, ten minutes each, attached to a session you have already booked rather than sold on their own.

Say anything medical at the start rather than halfway through. The NCCIH overview of massage therapy describes serious side effects as rare, and names the circumstances that make them more likely: bleeding disorders or blood thinners, low platelet counts, recent surgery, open wounds and fractures.

What an evening on the table can reasonably do is narrower than the marketing around it. MedlinePlus lists the physical signs of sustained stress as headaches, a stiff neck, disturbed sleep and stomach upset, and an hour of bodywork aims at the muscular end of that list. On pain, a 2015 Cochrane review pooled 25 trials of massage for low-back pain and found short-term improvement only, with the evidence rated low to very low quality.
